Continental Celebrates 10 Years of the Double Clutch Transmission
Many driving enthusiast believe there's nothing better than a manual transmission for a truly engaging experience, but Continental has long provided an alternative in the double clutch transmission (DCT). The DCT, which is a fully automatic transmission that adds fun driving characteristics, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Many drivers are trading in their manual transmission vehicles for the DCT, which offers better fuel efficiency, without losing that fun essence of driving. "We've been involved in double-clutch control since the end of the 1990s. From the onset, we have used our expertise in managing stepped automatic and continuously variable transmissions. This meant that in 2003, we were able to make a crucial contribution to a breakthrough in this transmission technology," said Rudolf Stark, head of the Transmission business unit, in a recent statement. Last year, the company produced more than 14 million control units around the world. From the start of this project, Continental has set milestones for the new technology, including the world's first six-speed wet double-clutch transmission, and the first dry version of the gearbox with seven speeds. However, there are more milestones that the company hopes to reach. The DCT is also ideal for hybrid drivetrains, as the design with two sub-transmissions will make it possible to place the electric motor between the engine and transmission. Continental has upped the ante and added a test and development center in Nuremburg to make it possible to test the functioning of the controls, and also how they interact with the hydraulic or electro-mechanical actuator.
