Porsche Mulling Idea of Sub-Panamera Midsize Sedan

By Jacob Brown | January 16, 2014
You can bet that Porsche is watching the Maserati Ghibli sedan very closely, a midsize luxury sedan that does battle with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series on the high end. The midsize luxury car is also already Maserati's best-seller after just a few months on sale and a car that has catapulted Maserati's sales ambitions. Now Porsche is looking at following suit with a midsize sedan luxury sedan that will slot underneath the Porsche Panamera. Nicknamed Pajun as of right now--short for Panamera Junior--the proposal for the idea has been around since 2012 without a clear sign-off date yet. If it were to be approved today, it would still take another three years, if not more, before it would see production. "Speaking very frankly, I can say this is one of many ideas we have, to build a car below Panamera,” Porsche CEO Matthias Muller told Autocar. "But it would be a difficult decision, because Porsche has just taken a huge step getting into the Macan market—not just developing the car but doubling the factory capacity, including the body shop and paint shop. It has been a huge effort for the whole company."
The 2015 Porsche Macan is the automaker's new compact crossover SUV that shares some parts with the Audi Q5. It is drawing huge interest for Porsche ahead of its on-sale date. The Porsche Macan S, which will be the lowest rung on the ladder until another model gets here, will start at around $50,000. Our take: Porsche has to be considering this strongly right now, as an entry-level sedan would go a long way towards securing sales near its stated 200,000-unit worldwide goal. Source: Autocar
