Official: Volkswagen to Debut Passat BlueMotion at 2014 Detroit Auto Show

By | January 08, 2014
Is it possible for a non-hybrid gasoline-powered midsize sedan to achieve 42 mpg? Volkswagen seems to think so. At the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, the automaker plans to roll out the Passat BlueMotion Concept, based off the current Volkswagen Passat model. The BlueMotion label, which signifies the most fuel-efficient models in the lineup, has been used globally since 2006 on other Volkswagen models. This concept marks the first time it's coming Stateside. The concept features the all-new version of Volkswagen's turbocharged 1.4-liter TSI engine with direct injection, codenamed EA211. It's a similar engine to the one featured in the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid. Along with a more fuel-efficient engine, the automaker has decided to include Active Cylinder Management (ACT) on the new U.S. model, which has only previously been on the European Polo and Golf models. This technology deactivates the valvetrain on the second and third cylinder when the driver is using light throttle pressure to maintain specific city speeds. Taking some cues from the Jetta Hybrid, the Passat BlueMotion will use the coasting function, which will decouple the engine when the driver takes their foot off the gas pedal, allowing the sedan to roll with low mechanical drag. A start/stop system will also be implemented, furthering the fuel savings. Although no official mpg testing has occurred, Volkswagen estimates this new model to achieve 42 mpg highway and deliver 150 horsepower--similar numbers to the diesel-powered Passat and what would be considered the best among non-hybrid gas-powered sedans in the segment by quite a wide margin.
