Week In Review: Spy Shots, Sales, and Videos

By | February 22, 2014
We took full advantage of President's Day this Monday, relaxing and taking a break from the hectic news cycle, but things picked back up on Tuesday. Our week was filled with more spy photos, car videos, record orders of diesel trucks, and sales of new models. We don't want to bog you down with all that happened this week, so we've grabbed the top story from each day so you can catch up on all you may have missed without wasting your weekend.

Our week kicked off with some winter testing spy shots of the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Cruze. With refreshed versions of the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic, Chevy needs to get a newer model out there to better compete. The new Cruze will feature narrow headlights and a refined front end. The taillights featured in the photos are reminiscent of the seventh-gen Corvette, giving the 2016 Cruze a more aggressive feel. Expect it to get a higher quality interior and a larger back seat. As Chevrolet's best-selling model worldwide, the stakes are pretty high for the new model when it debuts next year.

Automobile Magazine released its latest episode of CarPorn, and it didn't disappoint. The newest video features the 2014 Ford Fiesta ST, and this is a hot hatch if there ever was one. Set to some predictably sensual music and a backdrop of Warner Vineyards in Paw Paw, Mich., we get to see the new Fiesta ST inside and out. Thanks to different camera angles and lighting, the video really showcases the silhouette of the new model, and when it's time for the video to end, we are pulled out of the interior and get to watch it drive away. Be sure to watch the video to get a deeper look at the 2014 Ford Fiesta ST.

The 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel pickup truck just hit the market, and within three days, all models were sold out. Chrysler received 8,000 orders, suggesting that consumers had a heavy interest in fuel economy in their next pickup. The new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has best-in-class fuel economy and is powered by a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 engine that pushes out 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. We expected there to be a strong demand for the new model that just entered production this month, but this exceeded those expectations. The first round of models will be shipped out next month, and more customers will have the chance to purchase their Ram EcoDiesel when the second round of orders becomes available.

The week finished out with Honda announcing that the Accord was the best-selling car among individual buyers in 2013. The Accord finally managed to beat out the segment-leading Toyota Camry. Toyota did sell more units, but many of those numbers were fleet sales, and not retail. Along with the Accord, the Honda Civic managed to dethrone the Toyota Camry in the compact segment. For Honda's core products, including the Accord, Civic, and CR-V, the automaker boasted over 1.11 million units sold in 2013. However, the battle between Toyota and Honda is far from over. Honda may have just put out new models, but Toyota is expected to update the Camry for the 2015 model year.
