2015 Ford Mustang Convertible to Sit On Empire State Building

Forget Super Bowl ads. If you want to draw attention to a new car, put it on top of the Empire State Building. That is exactly what Ford did with the Mustang during the 1964 World's Fair in New York. Now, in honor of the Mustang's 50th birthday, Ford will place the new 2015 Mustang Convertible on top of the famed building next month. Once again, the Mustang will sit atop the 86th floor observatory, giving visitors a chance to look at the all-new car. But just how will Ford manage to pull off this stunt?
Just like the first time, Ford will cut up the Mustang into various pieces to fit inside the building's elevators. The crew measured the Empire State Building and its elevators so that pieces of the Mustang can be transported on custom-made racks up the building. However, this task is harder than it was 50 years ago. The new Mustang is almost seven inches longer and four inches wider than the original, making it that much riskier. After transporting the broken bits of Mustang, a crew will have less than six hours to put it back together for display on the skyline of Manhattan. With all the pieces, Ford has to make sure that when it is put together, there are no visible cuts to the sheetmetal. The special display comes just in time for the New York Auto Show, one of the most highly anticipated auto events in the U.S. every year. The vehicle will be on display April 16 and 17. Visitors to the Empire State Building observation deck will be able to get a close-up look at the 2015 Ford Mustang Convertible from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. on those days. Source: Ford
