Toyota Prius Named Best-Selling Car in California

By | March 03, 2014
Hybrids and electric vehicles have made it in a big way on the West Coast, with California being one of the largest markets for them in the states. For the second year in a row, the Toyota Prius has been named the best-selling vehicle line in California for 2013, followed closely by the Honda Civic. According to the California Auto Outlook report by the California New Car Dealers Association, Toyota managed to sell 69,728 units of the four-car Prius line over the course of 2013. The top three luxury vehicles were the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series sedan, and the Tesla Model S. The Toyota Prius has managed to stay on top as California's best-selling lineup thanks to strict emission rules. The U.S. average for hybrid and electric vehicles was 3.82 percent, while California's percentage hit 9.3 percent of all vehicles sold, according to Baum & Associates and HybridCars.com. Right now, Toyota offers the Prius in four different models, including the standard hatchback, V wagon, C subcompact, and plug-in model. While Toyota has managed to steadily sell the Prius lineup over the past two years, a recently announced recall may affect upcoming sales numbers. The automaker will be recalling nearly 2 million Prius vehicles to fix a software glitch that could cause the engine to stall or the car to lose power. Source: Toyota, Bloomberg
