Only Two Midsize SUVs Ace IIHS Small Overlap Front Crash Test
General Motors could use some good news, and finally here it is. In the most recent round of tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, GM's midsize SUVs topped all other competitors on the market. The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox and its cousin, the GMC Terrain, aced the difficult small overlap front crash test. This new evaluation simulates what happens when the corner of a car hits a tree, pole, or other object at 40 mph. For 2014, GM strengthened the front structure and door-hinge pillars on its midsize SUVs to improve safety in this area. Cars that didn't fare as well include the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota 4Runner, and Ford Explorer. These vehicles received ratings of "Marginal" on the small overlap test. But the worst out of the bunch were the Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-9, and Honda Pilot, which were rated "Poor." The ratings may give some indication of what injuries can occur in small overlap front crashes. In the top-scoring Equinox, the dummy's head hit the front airbag and stayed in position, and the vehicle maintained adequate space for the driver. However, in the poor-scoring Pilot, the parking brake pedal moved inward more than 16 inches to bang the dummy's knee and leg, and the head barely made contact with the airbag before jerking to the side. Only three midsize SUVs earn the Top Safety Pick + rating, the agency's highest honor. These vehicles include the Equinox and Terrain, as well as the Toyota Highlander. To earn this award, vehicles must earn perfect scores on all but the small overlap test, in which they have to score at least "Acceptable".
