Ford's 1.0-Liter EcoBoost Selling Fast
Before Ford made a move, 1.0-liter engines were only novelties from Europe. But Ford introduced its 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine to the U.S. last December, and within just a few months, sales have exceeded expectations. More than 1,000 customers have bought the 1.0-liter engine, and while this may not sound like a lot, it represents a great start. So far, the engine is only available on the Fiesta SE trim, and is only paired with a manual transmission. On top of that, consumers are not finding 1.0-liter cars on dealership lots, and are instead custom-ordering these models. Considering the obstacles, Ford's new tiny engine has done quite well so far. Right now, the 1.0-liter makes up about 4-8 percent of Fiesta sales. This take-rate is just about the same as the performance-oriented ST model. At this time, they may both be niche products, but this is likely to change soon. In the Fiesta, this engine provides 123 horsepower and uses direct-injection, turbocharging, and variable camshaft timing to deliver power and high fuel economy ratings of 32/45 mpg city/highway.
