2015 Ford Edge First Look

What's New

First debuting in 2007, the Edge brought car-like handling and good looks to the midsize utility segment. For the third generation, the Ford Edge builds upon this tradition with an even more striking appearance, a new trim level, and powertrain changes.
For 2015, the Edge is slightly larger and comes with a redesigned, trapezoidal grille for a more angular appearance. Character lines that run across the body give it an athletic look. Ford hopes the makeover will help appeal to global audiences, as the 2015 Edge will eventually be offered in over 100 markets around the world. The Edge arrives early next year with new technologies, including a new front camera for added safety. Meanwhile, enhanced park assist helps improve perpendicular and parallel parking in tight spaces while a new adaptive steering feature allows for better maneuverability on the road. Following in the footsteps of other Fords, the Edge is finally adopting a premium-oriented Titanium trim level. Other features to expect include hands-free liftgate, Sync with MyFord Touch, adaptive cruise control, inflatable rear safety belts, and optional heated and cooled front seats.

Engine and Drivetrain

The Ford's 3.5-liter V-6 engine will still be available for the 2015 model year, but it will not be the standard engine choice. This standard engine is a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, which will likely achieve high fuel economy numbers. A 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 is exclusively offered on the Sport trim and will deliver high performance. Ford calls this offering the "most advanced EcoBoost yet."
Along with the expanded EcoBoost options, Ford is also offering stop-start technology on the new Edge. This feature automatically turns off the engine at a stoplight and restarts it right when the driver takes the foot off the brake. This feature will be available as an option.

Our Thoughts

When we saw a Ford Edge Concept debut at this past LA Auto Show, we were disappointed that few changes seemed to have been made from the previous version. Looking at the final production version, however, and we think Ford has made some thoughtful changes to the design of this car. With all the EcoBoost offerings, Ford is moving in the right direction with making this model a hit with consumers. We just hope the new Edge doesn't drive as stiffly as the current model.
