Ford Drops Fuel Economy Ratings for 6 Vehicles

By | June 12, 2014
Due to internal testing errors, Ford has lowered fuel economy ratings on six vehicles from the 2013 and 2014 model years. The company also announced it will make goodwill payments to consumers affected by the lowered ratings. A number of models will drop between 1 and 7 mpg in combined city and highway ratings. Cars affected by this announcement include the 2014 Fiesta as well as the 2013-2014 C-Max, Fusion Hybrid, MKZ Hybrid, C-Max Energi, and Fusion Energi. Fuel economy ratings for the Fiesta suffer the least, with just a 1-2 mpg difference depending on the engine and transmission chosen. The Lincoln MKZ, however, plummeted from 45 mpg to just 38 mpg in combined ratings. The automaker said the error came from an internal testing procedure specific to a factor called "Total Road Load Horsepower," or TRLHP. The error, Ford said, is the result of a recent process change, which the company has now corrected. Ford said it has notified the EPA about the issue. “This is our error. When we see an issue, we address it,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. Owners of these vehicles will receive payments of up to $1,050 for the estimated difference in fuel costs. Ford is also printing out new fuel economy labels that will be ready in about six days.
