Jaguar Reveals Game-Like Head-Up Display

By | July 10, 2014
Head-up displays have been making their way onto luxury vehicles as a standard feature, and others have them as options. But Jaguar didn't want to settle for your run-of-the-mill display that only shows your speed and directions. The 'Jaguar Virtual Windscreen' will use the entire windshield as a display, giving drivers more information and a 'virtual' view of the road ahead, whether that's on the street or the track. Some of the performance benefits to this technology include racing lines and braking guidance, as well as ghost car racing and virtual cones. "We are working on research projects that will give the driver better information to enhance the driving experience. By presenting the highest quality imagery possible, a driver need only look at a display once. Showing virtual images that allow the driver to accurately judge speed and distance will enable better decision-making and offer real benefits for every-day driving on the rod, or the track," said Dr. Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover.
This display will help to keep the driver's eyes focused on the road ahead, but some of these features may be distracting. It will limit the fumbling around for buttons and switches, but focusing solely on the display features and not the actual cars on the road could potentially be an issue.
