Report: BMW to Offer 8 SUV Models in the Future
BMW has started expanding its SUV lineup, introducing the compact X1 for the 2013 model year. According to a report from Autocar, BMW may expand its offerings even further with new X2 and X8 models. By the time the end of the decade rolls around, BMW will likely have eight SUV offerings. The BMW X2 is arriving as a sporty three-door coupe version of the X1. And while not yet confirmed, the BMW X8 may be a sportier version of the X7 SUV for select markets including the U.S., Russia, China, and the Middle East. BMW is also revising a number of existing SUV models. The X1 is set to switch from rear-drive underpinnings to front-wheel drive. Meanwhile, the X3 receives the latest version of BMW's 2.0-liter turbodiesel, and the X5 adopts a new M version. The X6 has new styling, and a new X7 is set to be produced in North America as an extended version of the X5's underpinnings. BMW also recently introduced the X4, a coupe-like version of the X3 that may receive an M version in the future. Our take: BMW already has more luxury SUV offerings than competitors including Audi and Lexus. While we think introducing a number of new SUVs could broaden BMW's appeal, we just hope that all the new specialty models don't dilute sales (ahem, Mini Cooper). Source: Autocar U.K.
