2007 Hyundai Tiburon: Frenzied Feature & Styling
Tiburon means "shark" in Spanish and the 2007 Hyundai Tiburon coupe is prepped to kill the competition with refreshed sheet metal, interior, and modern conveniences like MP3 capability. October, 2006 -- Enthusiasts on a budget no longer have to sacrifice their desire for track-inspired styling and handling in a sports coupe now that Hyundai has factory tweaked the components and design of the 2007 Tiburon. Blood is in the water because the V-6 powered Tiburon will start well below the four-cylinder Mitsubishi Eclipse GS at $19,928. Tiburon has been reconfigured as a totally balanced cornering machine, available with a modified suspension from Europe, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and 12-inch, cross-drilled rotors formerly available only from the Korean domestic market on the Hyundai Tuscani. NEW FOR 2007 - Redesigned front and rear fascia, headlights, taillights, hood, front fenders and exhaust tips - Blue backlit gauges and gun metal accents - Standard MP3 capability - Standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TMPS) - ESC with Brake Assist and Traction Control (SE model) - Cross-drilled brake rotors with larger rotor size (SE model) - European sport suspension tuning (SE model) Full-size spare tire (SE model) This striking coupe comes in three trim options for 2007: the stylish and affordable GS, the sporty performance SE and the refined performance GT and GT limited. As an added bonus, the SE model comes standard-equipped with a responsive suspension technology featuring sport-tuned European suspension calibration, Electronic Stability Control and brake assist. The sport-tuned suspension provides the Tiburon with tighter spring calibration and firmer damper control giving the car a grounded, sporty driving sensation similar to that of a European sports car. TRACK-INSPIRED AND PASSIONATE DESIGN The 2007 Tiburon is defined by its dynamic and aggressive styling. Starting with classic coupe proportions, Hyundai’s designers added a new hood with muscular character lines, projector headlights and an aggressive front valance panel. A wedge-like silhouette extends back from the front wheel openings into the tail lights. The attention-grabbing fender side strake garnish provides design continuity with the new front valance. A new track-inspired rear diffuser and bright dual exhausts further connote speed and power. Combined with the SE’s new cross-drilled front brake rotors and updated wheel design, the 2007 Tiburon evokes the tarmac-hugging performance of international motorsport as it strides down the road. SEGMENT-LEADING SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES At Hyundai, hard driving begins with safety. That’s why the 2007 Tiburon includes a wide range of both active and passive safety features. For 2007, the Tiburon SE gets Electronic Stability Control (ESC), one of the industry’s most effective life-saving technologies. IIHS studies show vehicles equipped with ESC experience 56 percent fewer fatalities in single-vehicle crashes. Tiburon SE’s ESC system also includes Brake Assist, which provides maximum ABS-level braking force when a panic stop is detected. Larger front (12-in.) cross-drilled rotors are also standard on the SE. All Tiburon models feature standard four-channel ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) to optimize brake performance under various dynamic loading conditions. In terms of passive safety, the Tiburon has strong unibody construction, along with front and rear crumple zones, body-side reinforcements, and five-mph energy-absorbing bumpers. The hood also includes buckling creases and safety stops. Inside, you’ll find driver and front passenger advanced frontal airbags, along with front seat-mounted side airbags. The front seatbelts have pretensioners and force limiters, and the outboard rear positions feature LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children), which make affixing child safety seats easier. ENHANCED CHASSIS TUNING FOR TIBURON SE For 2007, the high-performance Tiburon SE becomes an even more exciting and willing partner for enthusiastic driving. With significantly firmer suspension settings than last year, Tiburon SE goes from being a great handling coupe to a truly exceptional one. The new European-tuned suspension features 13 percent stiffer front spring rate, 10 percent stiffer rear spring rate and unique strut valving. Tiburon SE delivers a 32 percent increase in roll control over the GS. In fact, Tiburon’s torsional rigidity is better than the current Infinity G35 coupe and Tiburon’s bending rigidity bests the BMW M3. This superb structural rigidity sets the foundation for precisely tuned handling performance. All Tiburon models are superbly fun to drive and feature MacPherson strut front and multi-link independent rear suspension. The front suspension uses fade-resistant gas-filled hydraulic struts and a stabilizer bar to control body roll. The multi-link rear system precisely tunes the chassis via gas-filled hydraulic shocks and a stabilizer bar. Advantages of the multi-link rear suspension include optimized rear suspension geometry for added handling and braking stability. Precise power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering is combined with the suspension for responsive handling. Also standard are 205/55R16 performance tires on the Tiburon GS and wider 215/45R17 rubber on the GT, SE and GT Limited. ACCOMMODATING INTERIOR In keeping with its mission to be the most exciting, affordable sporty coupe on the road, the new Tiburon boasts a refreshed interior designed to be an integral part of the driving experience. It begins with easy entry and exit through wide door openings to front seats with large side bolsters, which offer excellent lateral support for enthusiastic driving. High-quality seating surfaces range from full black fabric on the Tiburon GS, to black cloth inserts with black leather bolsters on the GT, to black cloth inserts with red leather bolsters on the SE. The Tiburon GT Limited is available with full red leather seating surfaces for an even more distinctive look. All of the cockpit features are ergonomically designed for ease of operation, from the driver’s controls to the new HVAC and audio system layout in the center stack, the latter of which is highlighted with a new gun metal finish. An ambient temperature display and improved cupholder and center console also have been added this year. Redesigned analog gauges include a large speedometer and tachometer positioned so the driver can immediately access critical driving information. The instrument cluster now features Hyundai’s signature blue gauge illumination as well. The three-spoke steering wheel in each trim level is also unique: the GS wheel has a high-quality urethane covering; the Tiburon GT, GT Limited and SE wheel is leather wrapped. TWO POTENT ENGINES, THREE TRANSMISSIONS The 2007 Tiburon’s power trip starts with Hyundai’s advanced DOHC 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine rated at 138 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 136 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm. Standard equipment on the Tiburon GS, this engine technology includes four valves per cylinder with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT), which improves horsepower at high rpm and torque at low rpm, while also reducing NOx emissions. Matching transmissions include a fun-to-shift five-speed manual and an available four-speed automatic with Hyundai’s SHIFTRONIC® control system—a distinct advantage in the Tiburon’s class. Estimated fuel economy is 23 mpg City/31 mpg Highway with manual transmission – 22 mpg City/30 mpg Highway with the automatic. Standard on the 2006 Tiburon GT, SE and GT Limited is a powerful all-aluminum 2.7-liter V6. This DOHC, 24-valve engine is rated at 172 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 181 lbs.-ft. of torque at a low 3800 rpm. The big torque numbers at low engine speeds particularly benefit drivers in such daily driving challenges as initial acceleration, entering freeway on-ramps, passing and hill climbing. A standard five-speed manual transmission takes full advantage of the V6’s additional power, while a six-speed ZF manual powers the Tiburon SE. A four-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC® is available on the GT and GT Limited. Estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg City/27 mpg Highway for both the Tiburon GT and GT Limited, regardless of transmission. The SE yields an estimated 18 mpg City/26 mpg Highway. TIBURON GS Equipped with an array of standard features, the only corners the GS cuts are those lined by pavement. Under the hood, a 2.0L DOHC four-cylinder engine is mated with a standard, five-speed manual or automatic transmission. The GS comes packed with class-leading standard safety technologies including ABS, TPMS, advanced front-and front side-impact air bags. Interior features include power windows, door locks, heated mirrors, a remote keyless entry system with alarm and a 220-watt Kenwood AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system. The exterior incorporates 16-inch alloy wheels, a body-colored low spoiler, fog lights and a new-for-2007 glass antenna. The GS offers all the comforts and features consumers expect in an entry-level sports coupe. The Premium Package adds a sunroof and cruise control. TIBURON GT Loaded with everything found on the GS, the GT revs up Tiburon’s sex appeal with a 2.7L DOHC V6 engine, 17-inch alloy wheels and black leather seat bolsters with cloth inserts. Other standard interior features include a fully automatic temperature control with an air quality system, leather-wrapped steering wheel, driver lumbar support, cruise control, metalgrain interior trim, a trip computer and an AM/FM/CD/MP3/cassette audio system. A 440-watt Infinity AM/FM/6-CD/MP3 audio system with subwoofer and a sunroof are available with the Sun and Sound package. TIBURON GT LIMITED Taking the GT over the top, the GT Limited redefines performance by offering the ultimate in sport-coupe luxury. The new GT Limited features standard red leather interior, a sunroof and a 440-watt Infinity AM/FM/6-CD/MP3 audio system with subwoofer. TIBURON SE Designed for drivers in search of the ultimate in affordable, sporty performance, the SE holds nothing back. Building upon the GT’s features, the SE adds a ZF six-speed manual transmission, 220-watt Kenwood AM/FM/CD/MP3 player, multi-gauge cluster, a high spoiler, red aluminum front calipers, aluminum pedals and, new for 2007, red leather bolster/black cloth insert seats, ESC with Brake Assist and Traction Control System (TCS), a European sport-tuned suspension, and larger, track-inspired, cross-drilled brake rotors. A sunroof is also available as an option. Our take? The Tiburon has always been the most interesting looking vehicle among Hyundai's lineup and its prices, which is thousands less than the competition--make it doubly so.
