2011 Los Angeles Auto Show: 2012 Jaguar XKR-S Convertible Debut

What's New The silk cover has been pulled away, revealing what could well be the ultimate Jaguar convertible. Making its world debut at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2012 Jaguar XKR-S convertible showcases a 550-hp 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine, but in the XKR's stunning convertible body. The XKR-S is on the receiving end of the facelift all Jag models received at the hands of Director of Design, Ian Collum. The interior is similar if not identical from its fixed-roof model sibling and that means a finicky touchscreen and lots of luxurious materials. Want one? Then bring money: Jaguar announced that the price will be $138,000. Who's It For The 2012 Jaguar XKR-S convertible is strictly for those who don't think a beefed-up British sports coupe is enough. Having the ability to remove the top whenever the driver sees fit and commanding 542 ponies under your right foot aren't two things that are paired together often. The XKR-S offers all the modern amenities stuffed into a vehicle that could take to the track at a moment's notice. Having the open sky above your head while going from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds isn't something many vehicles, luxury or not, can lay claim to. Primary competitors include the 2012 BMW M convertible, 2012 Audi R8 convertible, 2012 Ford Mustang convertible, and the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette convertible. Key Features Jaguar has stuffed the 2012 XKR-S to the brim with enough luxury and technology to clearly separate itself from other vehicles in the segment. These include:
  • A removable roof. The XKR-S has a soft-top ceiling that can be taken off whenever the driver feels necessary. Who doesn't like a convertible?
  • Engine. The usual 5.0-liter V-8 supercharged engine is responsible for motivation along with 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. That's actually more horsepower and torque than its fixed-roof sibling. Top speed is electronically limited, but anything past that 186 mph limit is perhaps too obscene for a car of the Jaguar's demeanor.
  • Upscale interior. A touchscreen and soft-touch materials galore make its presence known inside the XKR-S just like they do in all of Jaguar's vehicles.
  • High price. Carrying an expected price tag of $138,000 you can almost guarantee there won't be too many duplicates in the local grocery store parking lot.
What We Think At first glance what's not to love? A high-end luxury convertible paired with an engine that produces 550horsepower is appealing to anyone. However we think the price tag may scare some people off but that's a good thing for those who can actually afford it. We expect the interior to mirror that of the coupe that shares the same nameplate so lots of soft-touch materials should be abundant. The true test of just how great this convertible can and should be won't be confirmed until we get behind the wheel and take the top down. Seeing it on the convention center floor just won't cut it so stay tuned for more details.
