2011 Saab 9-5 and Volkswagen CC Named Top Safety Picks by IIHS
The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety announced today that the 2011 Saab 9-5 and the 2011/2012 Volkswagen CC have been awarded Top Safety Picks. Already tested for front, side, and rear crash protection, the IIHS found that the Saab 9-5 and Volkswagen CC successfully completed rollover protection tests with “Good” ratings. In the simulated rollover, the IIHS uses a machine to apply a constant force to the roof of each car down to five inches of crushed space. The IIHS measures the force it takes to crumple each roof and compares it to the weight of each car to find strength-to-weight ratios. While both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive Saab 9-5s passed with “Good” ratings, the IIHS found that the heavier all-wheel drive version of the Volkswagen CC did not pass with the same success as its lighter front-wheel drive stablemate, leading the Institute to only give its top rating to the front-wheel drive CC.Both the Saab and Volkswagen come with standard safety features including standard electronic stability control, airbags mounted in front, side, and head locations, and sensors to actively prevent a rollover. The Saab has active head restraints to prevent whiplash and roof-mounted airbags while the CC features Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System that cuts power to the engine, unlocks the doors, and engage the hazard lights in the event of a collision. Other cars in the Saab 9-5’s class receiving 2011 Top Safety Pick accolades include the Buick LaCrosse, BMW 5 Series (except for the V8 and all-wheel drive models), Cadillac CTS sedan, Hyundai Genesis, Infiniti M (except for the M56x all-wheel drive model), Lincoln MKS, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Volvo S80. Volkswagen CC competitors with Top Safety Pick designations range from the Audi A4 and Volvo S60 sedans to the Lincoln MKZ and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Source: Insurance Institute of Highway Safety
