2012 New York Auto Show Preview, Part 3

By Keith Buglewicz | March 30, 2012
One week to go before the official media preview days begin for the 2012 New York International Auto Show, but already the curtain is being pulled back further and further. Today, we're showing you five new vehicles from BMW, Fisker, Ford, GMC and Toyota. In addition, all we could ever want to know about the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse has been unveiled, and we now have our first look at the 2013 Lexus ES. Paragraphimage 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe

Like the styling of the 2012 BMW 6 Series coupe, but need a little more back seat room? Then does BMW have the car for you. The 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe boasts the same sleek styling, but manages to add in two more doors. The result is BMW's first "four-door coupe," one that is aimed at those who otherwise would seek out a Mercedes-Benz CLS or Audi A7. While we still chafe at the idea of any four-door being called a "coupe," there's no denying this is a sexy car. Paragraphimage Fisker "Nina" Concept

It is no secret that Fisker, maker of the Karma plug-in-hybrid luxury sport sedan, has been working on a smaller and more affordable vehicle. What is a secret is exactly what the small car will look like, but we'll have a better idea next week when Fisker pulls the wraps off its new sedan in New York. Technically, this isn't a New York Auto Show debut, since the small Fisker will actually be showcased at its own event, and not at the Javits convention center. But, it is going to happen in New York, and the company will show and auto, so we're just sticking with it. So far, all we have is this line drawing. Come back soon to check out the whole thing. Paragraphimage 2013 Ford Explorer Sport

There are two kinds of EcoBoost engines in the Ford family. The first is a four-cylinder, primarily designed to give the power of a V-6 with the fuel economy of a four-cylinder. At least that's the tagline; Motor Trend found the engine lacking in its review of the EcoBoost 2012 Ford Explorer. MT's associate editor Mike Febbo complained, "The EcoBoost is a horrible idea in this thing. Well, the four-banger is anyway. Let's get a V-6 EcoBoost in there." So, should the 2013 Ford Explorer Sport be the Febbo Edition? The "V-6 EcoBoost" he referred to is the 355-hp turbocharged V-6 currently under the hood of the Ford Flex, and soon, the Explorer Sport. There's more too; check it out. Paragraphimage 2013 GMC Terrain Denali

This may be the first time that adding chrome actually toned down the styling of a vehicle. Since its introduction, the GMC Terrain small crossover has garnered attention for its, um, let's say bold styling. Especially the grille, which looks like it was pulled without modification straight from one of GMC's heavy-duty pickups. Now GMC is upping the luxury quota for its small crossover with the 2013 GMC Terrain Denali, along with the signature Remington razor grille. And you know what? It actually looks pretty nice. The Terrain Denali also gets nicer interior trim and a few other upgrades, plus it's available with a bigger V-6 engine, or the hot-selling four-cylinder. Paragraphimage 2013 Toyota Avalon

We still don't know a whole lot about the next-generation Toyota Avalon. But, hey, why not just speculate? Rumors have it that the 2013 Toyota Avalon will shed its old-man's-car image for something younger and sportier. This would be a first for a big Toyota, as the company's largest offerings have been plush cruisers since the days of the Crown and Cressida. The only thing we can say for sure is that the stylized teaser drawing Toyota has released will surely be toned down for production. Exactly how much though remains a mystery, and we'll find out in New York. Paragraphimage Update: 2013 Chevrolet Traverse

A few days ago, we told you about the 2013 Chevy Traverse's teaser. Now, we have the whole story, and it's a good one. The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse, like its GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave siblings, is getting a substantial refresh, and not a moment too soon. We like the new look. It's certainly more distinctive than the what-was-that styling of the first Traverse, but more importantly, the interior looks like a huge step forward. Chevy is promising higher quality materials, its advanced MyLink infotainment system, and numerous other small upgrades that translate to a bigger step forward. Paragraphimage Update: 2013 Lexus ES

We still don't know what's in store for the 2013 Lexus ES, but we do have a hint about what it'll look like at least, thanks to the teaser shot that Lexus sent out earlier this week. As expected, the ES is adopting the "spindle" grille treatment of its newer Lexus siblings, such as the 2012 Lexus GS. However, the ES and the Toyota Avalon share a lot of the same engineering, so it's possible that Lexus will take its popular front-wheel drive sedan in the same general let's-make-it-not-so-boring direction as its Toyota cousin. Not to be redundant, but we'll find out at the show.
