2012 North American Car and Truck Of The Year Finalists Announced

Habemus Papam! The finalists for the 2012 North American Car of the Year awards are out, and up for grabs this year are the Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra and Volkswagen Passat. On the flip side, the North American Truck of the Year finalists are a diverse field: the BMW X3, the Honda CR-V and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque are all shortlisted for the prize. Fifty automotive journalists locked themselves away for the past month, announcing the finalists only through a smoke signal above the Renaissance Center.  OK, maybe not. But as they do every year, the North American COTY awards differ from awards presented by individual media outlets (such as Motor Trend’s) in that it’s comprised of journalists from hundreds of TV, print, and online outlets. This Curia Romana went through two rounds of voting, narrowing down 17 cars and seven trucks that were new or significantly changed for the 2012 model year. Through intense deliberation, road test experience, and gallons of Dunkin Donuts coffee, they whittled down the list to the six vehicles above.
The announcement will be made at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 9. They will be administered by a six-person committee to announce the eventual winner. Dan Brown will not be present. Source: North American Car and Truck of the Year
