2013 Chevy Malibu Engine Specs Announced

By Joel Arellano | March 09, 2012
General Motors has issued details on the full engine lineup for the upcoming 2013 Chevrolet Malibu sedan. We already know about the maximum fuel economy offered by the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco model, which gets an EPA-estimated 25 mpg city and 37 mpg. The Chevy Malibu achieves these figures due to eAssist, which combines a stop/start system to temporarily shut down the engine at stops; a mild hybrid powertrain to start the engine; and regenerative braking system to keep the batteries. The standard issue engine for Chevy Malibu sedans will be GM's all-new Ecotec 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. With an estimated 197 horsepower, it outperforms the all-new 2013 Ford Fusion's 2.5-liter four banger (170 horsepower) and the heavily refreshed 2013 Toyota Camry's 2.5 liter inline-four (178 horsepower). Chevy's new engine is roughly on par with the current model year Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima sedans slightly smaller 2.4-liter four, which generates 198 horsepower. The Chevrolet Malibu will also be offered with a four-cylinder 2.0-liter Ecotec turbo option. Generating nearly 260-horsepower, turbocharged Ecotec Chevy Malibu sedans will be able to bolt from zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, likely bypassing the 2013 Ford Fusion turbo (237 horsepower). That's only slightly less than most of the V-6 engines in the segment, and a bit less than the current turbo options for the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima, which generates 274 horsepower. The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is currently on sale in Asia. Chevy Malibu sedans equipped with the Ecotec 2.5-liter engine will go on sale in the states this summer with the turbo-equipped Malibu models following in the fall. Source: General Motors/Chevrolet
