2013 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG Powers Flagship Crossover SUV

Mercedes is beginning to trickle out information on its 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, the full-sized, seven-passenger crossover SUV which debuted at this year's New York Auto Show. While the 2013 Mercedes GL450, GL550, and the diesel-powered GL350 BlueTEC are scheduled to arrive at dealerships in the third quarter of 2012, the automaker has decided to release details first on the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG, the "hotrod" model of the lineup. AMG, which Mercedes-Benz's in-house tuner division, has extensively modified the GL63 AMG for its unique role as a sporty, full-size luxury SUV crossover. The "heart", or powertrain, of the GL-Class is an AMG 5.5-liter, dual-turbo, V-8 engine coupled with AMG's seven-speed automatic transmission. The Mercedes-Benz GL63 is capable of going from zero to 60 in less than five seconds, which is enough to bypass eighteen wheelers, other SUVs, and many sports cars. Mercedes, though, is mindful on consumer interest in fuel economy, and the GL63 comes equipped with a stop/start system which shuts down the engine when the vehicle is not in motion. Mercedes also states GL63 AMG's steering system only uses power when actually turning the wheel, also saving fuel. The fuel savings, though, is unknown: neither Mercedes nor the EPA have released fuel economy figures at this time. Other AMG features include a unique grille design, red brake calipers, and AMG badges, especially in the interior. The Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG comes well equipped, with many features standard including powered tailgate, premium leather seating, massage chairs for the front row, and powered sunroof. Optional equipment includes an all-around camera system, premium audio system from Bang & Olufsen, and a panoramic sunroof which covers (and opens over) all three rows. States Ola Kallenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz AMG, "With the new GL63 AMG, our range of performance-oriented SUVs is now complete."
