Details and "spy shots" of the Porsche 918 Spyder super car were recently "found" on the Porsche media site, sending car enthusiasts into a feeding frenzy as they consumed the various tidbits of information. And there's a lot of it. The Porsche 918 convertible is a plug-in hybrid, with not one, but two electric motors as well as a conventional -- though powerful--4.6-liter V-6 V-8 engine. Porsche estimates the powertrain can generates 770 horsepower; the Porsche 918 can bolt from zero to 60 mph in less than three seconds. Fuel economy of the Porsche 918, of course, have not been released though the super car can travel up to 15 miles on pure electricity before the gasoline engine kicks in. A "spyder" is another term for a convertible. The Porsche 918 Spyder comes equipped with a two-piece hardtop unit by Targa. The Porsche 918 convertible is amply built from carbon fiber to lower its weight without sacrificing material strength. All these features and others show that the automaker continues to be serious in its commitment to sporty fun in an time where fuel efficiency, not speed, is rising. Says Wolfgang Hatz, a member of Porsche's Executive Research and Development board, "What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance." There was no information on the interior of the Porsche 918 except that it will be a two-seater. Porsche tentatively plans to start production of the 918 around September 2013 with the car going on sale later that year. Source: Porsche
