2013 Scion FR-S and 2013 Volkswagen GTI Take on Each Other and Legendary 1989 BMW M3 in Head2Head Comparo

By Jacob Brown | April 25, 2013
If you'd believe it us auto journalists, the 1989 BMW M3 was the high watermark of sports coupes. Everything for the last two and a half decades since then has just been wheezing hard as it struggles to catch up. Or has it? Motor Trend writer Mike Febbo partnered with European Car's Greg Emmerson to find out in this week's episode of Head2Head, pitting the M3 against two similarly powerful, would-be-modern-day contenders, the 2013 Scion FR-S and 2013 Volkswagen GTI. All three are sporting beasts; the Volkswagen GTI makes 200 horsepower from its turbocharged, 2.0-liter engine, and the lighter Scion FR-S used its high-revving boxer engine to make the same amount of power but far less torque from 2.0 liters. Despite the age and technology differences, the 1989 M3 gave up just 8 horsepower from its 2.3-liter four-cylinder. Febbo and Emmerson put the cars through their paces on the Streets of Willow Raceway, bantering back and forth about the car they'd rather take home. At the end of the day, they come to an agreement, but it might not be what you were expecting. Watch the video below to see for yourself.
