2013 Toyota Avalon Picks Up Its A-Game as New Competition Emerges

By Jacob Brown | April 05, 2012
With the 2013 Toyota Avalon debuting at the 2012 New York International Auto Show, the Japanese automaker has signaled that it's done playing softball with the competition. Already, we've seen a restyled 2013 Ford Taurus, a new 2012 Hyundai Azera, and a just-introduced 2014 Chevrolet Impala enter the burgeoning full-size sedan segment in this auto show cycle alone. With each of them looking like credible threats, Toyota ramped up its efforts to make the 2013 Avalon a bolder, sportier car without sacrificing its core mission. So far, so good. The 2013 Toyota Avalon comes in more than two inches shorter than the car it replaces. But all of that has been pared from the front and rear overhangs, leaving a stretched 111-inch wheelbase intact for passenger space. The roofline has been lowered, too, but the Avalon picks up space in its trunk as a result of better packaging. It looks more taut and aggressive, yet it doesn't sacrifice creature comforts. In fact, the 2013 Toyota Avalon will come with more of them than the 2012 model, featuring three built-in color displays for audio, navigation, climate control, and other functions. It will also have available active cruise control, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a JBL Synthesis premium audio system, and tri-zone climate control. But Toyota hasn't just added features; it's fixed existing ones, too. The 2012 Toyota Avalon came funky colored, hard plastics all over the dashboard that more resembled a space pod. Not so with the 2013 model. Instead, Toyota has seen fit to infuse the Avalon with an interior deserving of a premium vehicle, with stitched soft-touch materials adorning the dashboard, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob, and seats. Contrasting with those are smoked chrome-metallic trim pieces. Toyota didn't announce a price or engine specifications, but it's safe to say the car will start at more the the current Avalon's $33,955 asking price. Look for the 2013 Toyota Avalon to go on sale late this year.
