2013 Volkswagen Golf Details Allegedly Spill Before September Debut
Volkswagen, in the first presentation made outlining the changes and upgrades the all-new 2013 Volkswagen Golf is to receive, has assured fans that the new hatchback isn't going to be just another heavy refresh like the current model. It's going to get the full do-over, bigger, better, and stronger than it was before. And it's going to be lighter, too. A leaked video shows the 2013 VW Golf will allegedly shed 100 kilograms, or about 220 pounds. Any way you stack it, that's a lot of weight, bringing the car's girth down to around 2,700 pounds, among the lightest in its class. But Volkswagen assures that it'll be safer, quieter, and more fuel-efficient, too. Based on the same all-new MQB platform that it will share with the 2013 Audi A3 hatchback, the Volkswagen Golf is expected to get up to 23 percent better fuel economy by way of cylinder deactivation than the outgoing model . The U.S. Volkswagen Golf is saddled with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 170 horsepower. But it's no secret that Volkswagen is planning to discontinue it for a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder. In Europe, the volume seller for gas engines will be a 1.4-liter four-cylinder that is making its stateside debut in the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid. It's not yet known which engine or engines will make it to the U.S. The 2013 Volkswagen Golf is set to debut on September 4, ushering in a new era of the lighter, bigger hatchback. It will also bring technologies like fatigue detection, adaptive cruise control, and the availability of a panoramic sunroof to the compact car masses. And it should serve warning to the rest of the industry that Volkswagen is back. For the U.S., Volkswagen decontented the Jetta, which actually brought down the price of the Jetta and propelled it into being a better seller. Will VW try that strategy with the Golf? We'll have to wait and see.
