The 2014 BMW i8 is finally ready for production, and is expected to arrive in dealerships in Spring 2014. When it hits showroom floors, the i8 hybrid will be BMW's second most expensive car, behind the 2014 BMW 760Li sedan, which starts north of $140,000, and climbs quickly. The 2014 BMW i8 will have a total output of 362 hp, with a unique hybrid system that employs a 231-hp, 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, and sends power to the rear wheels. The 131 hp electric motor opts for a two-speed transmission, and is used to power the front wheels. The result? A very fast hybrid; BMW claims a very impressive 0-60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds.
The BMW i8 is make of a carbon fiber structure, and is covered with aluminum body panels, helping it keep weight down. The 2014 i8 will also boast a near 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, and will tip the scales at a very light 3,285 pounds. Fuel economy is not yet available. The 2014 i8 will be able to travel up to 22 miles on purely electric power, or hit up to 75 mph. We'll be expecting more details closer to launch. Does the 2014 BMW i8 intrigue you? Source: BMW
