2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class earns Top Safety Pick+

By | October 08, 2013
Thanks to recent structural changes, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class has earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. These changes helped the midsize luxury SUV earn a Good rating in the new small overlap front test and a Basic in the front crash prevention test. This year, only the 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class and the 2013 Volvo XC60 have earned Top Safety Pick+ awards for the midsize luxury SUV segment. However, a handful of others managed to earn the award, including the 2013 Cadillac SRX, 2013 Audi Q5, 2013 BMW X3, and 2014 Lexus RX. With the addition of the new small overlap front test, the majority of vehicles have not been tested, resulting in a lower award. In addition to the new test, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has added another test to its curriculum. Now, front crash prevention systems will be tested, with each receiving either a Basic, Advanced, or Superior rating. To earn a Top Safety Pick+ award, vehicles must have standard or available front crash prevention systems, and receive a Good or Acceptable score in the small overlap front crash test. So far, only the Volvo and Mercedes-Benz have been able to achieve this award. Source: IIHS
