2014 Subaru Impreza, XV Crosstrek Nab Top Safety Pick + Ratings

By | November 05, 2013
The 2014 Impreza small car and XV Crosstrek crossover are the latest Subaru models to score the highest possible safety award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Both cars received Top Safety Pick + status for scoring well on five different crash categories, including moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraints and seats, and the new small overlap front test. Each model earned top scores of "Good" in all sections.
According to the IIHS, the Impreza and XV Crosstrek excelled in the difficult small overlap test, which simulates what happens when the front corner of a car collides with an object, tree, or another car. In these crashes, drivers have a "low risk of any serious injury" in an Impreza or XV Crosstrek model. During the tests, the dummy's head kept in a good position when making contact with the front airbag. The side airbags properly protected the head from hitting side structures or outside objects.
Subaru made key structural changes to its cars starting with the 2014 model year, helping the company nab top scores in frontal crash safety. The Top Safety Pick + ratings apply to 2014 model year Impreza wagon and four-door sedan models, excluding the WRX. All 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek models introduced so far are included in the rating. Subaru has snagged a number of safety awards from the IIHS recently. The Legacy, Outback, and Forester models also received Top Safety Pick + awards recently, while the BRZ and Tribeca models received Top Safety Pick awards (without the +). Cars must earn a score of at least "Acceptable" on the small overlap test to be considered for the + designation. Source: IIHS
