Behind the Wheel: 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
How one defines luxury can vary enormously, but for the Mercedes-Benz suits in Stuttgart, it begins with the letter "S." The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class arrives to build on a model that has been the benchmark by which all other automakers aspire. The Mercedes-Benz S500 will be rebadged as the 2014 S550 when it goes on sale in the U.S. in September, but it's not just a new badge, but a completely revamped luxury sedan we'll be getting. What's new? The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 adds a host of advanced technologies; Optional features such as Magic Body Control use sensors to scan the road ahead, and adjust the suspension for potholes, speed bumps, and the like. Do you keep hearing how autonomous driving will one day be available in cars? It's here. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class doesn't need you, it can drive itself. Legal regulations don't allow the car to drive for you, so the feature works for 10 seconds before yelling at you to pay attention to the road. The interior is bathed in rich materials, and the rear seats have been designed to emulate a first-class flight experience. The rear can even pass for a mobile office, with dedicated WiFi, a fold-out table to place a laptop or iPad, and serenely comfortable and quiet cabin. Of course, there's a touch of the absurd, too. You can't be the ultimate, without pushing a few boundaries: the 2014 Mercdes-Benz S550 has air fragrance perfumes, currently there are four scents to choose from, depending on your mood. Sports, Nightlife, Downtown, and something called "Freeside Mood," are all available to please your nostrils.
