BMW to Debut Refreshed Z4 and Limited Edition "Lifestyle" 1 Series at Detroit Auto Show
In addition to the BMW 4 Series concept--the coupe that is replacing the 3 Series coupe--and the M6 Gran Coupe, BMW will be bringing over two more new vehicles for the 2013 Detroit Auto Show: The refreshed 2013 BMW Z4 sports car and BMW 1 Series Limited Edition Lifestyle coupe and convertible. Neither model is all-new; in fact, 2013 will mark the sixth model year of the 1 Series and fifth model year for the current Z4. BMW redesigns vehicles on seven-year cycles. But their refreshes are significant in keeping BMW customers happy and coming through the showroom, especially given that much newer competition aims to steal away some of their sales. The Z4 retractable hardtop roadster gains a new entry-level model with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 156 horsepower--down from the 240-horsepower Z4 sDrive28i. The new model will be positioned below its bigger-engined brother and dubbed sDrive20i. The hope for BMW is to bring more customers in, as the Z4 lost much of its clientele as its price ballooned in its second generation. The base Z4 sDrive28i currently starts at $48,245 and can swing all the up beyond $65,000 for a six-cylinder car without too many options selected.BMW says the Z4 sDrive20i will be available with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. Beyond the addition of a new base engine, the Z4 will also new 17- and 18-inch wheels. An M Sport package will become available. And BMW's ConnectedDrive suite will now be available across the Z4 range instead of just higher-trim models. For the 1 Series, the new Lifestyle limited edition will have an exclusive Mineral White available in addition to two other colors, 18-inch wheels, and a brown soft top with the convertible model with silver accents. Brown leather with white accents will complement the car's look. These models look to keep BMW fresh as a new coupe and convertible 2 Series waits in the wings in another two years and the Z4 competes against an all-new Porsche Boxster and livened up Mercedes-Benz SLK.
