Captain Obvious Statistic of the Day: Seniors Love Domestic Luxury

In case you missed it: Old people, those whose lives begin at 65, really love Buick, Lincoln, Cadillac, and Chrysler. We're aware of the stereotype, so this news is not shocking--but the statistics confirm wide-held beliefs about brand ownership. According to, which conducted a national study of automotive purchases between 2009 and 2010, seniors dominated the domestic luxury segment by an overwhelming majority. How so? Consider the following statistics:
  • 57.5 percent Buick owners are seniors
  • 47.7 percent Lincoln owners are seniors
  • 44.0 percent Cadillac owners are seniors
  • 36.1 percent Chrysler owners are seniors
That means one in every two Buick owners has been AARP qualified for at least 15 years.
"Seniors are looking for a luxurious and comfortable vehicle from a brand they are familiar with and trust," said Jesse Toprak, Vice President of Trends and Analysis at, "and many seniors grew up with these iconic American luxury brands in their parents' garage." In addition to brand stereotypes,'s study shows that, for the years studied, senior citizens also chose stereotypically "old people" people movers like the Lincoln Town Car and Cadillac STS.
