Chrysler Working on New Supercharged V-8 "Hellcat" Engine

By Trevor Dorchies | May 20, 2013
You know that whole corporate average fuel economy standards thing where the government is asking automakers to start producing vehicles that achieve 54.5 mpg by 2025? Yeah, Chrysler Group is aware of CAFE and plans to participate, but that's not to say it won't build one last ozone-incinerating 6.2-liter V-8 supercharged Hemi engine before these regulations are enforced. The "Hellcat," as it's affectionately known as around Auburn Hills, will rely on a supercharger for that extra boost of power and early estimates peg this new Hemi's output somewhere in the ballpark of 640 horsepower. That's the same amount produced from the V-10 engine seen in the all-new 2013 SRT Viper. With this new engine, Chrysler is aiming squarely at the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The Hellcat engine is expected to make its official debut in the next-generation Dodge Challenger, but don't be surprised if it appears in other vehicles in Chrysler Group's portfolio, too. Chrysler Group's new eight-speed automatic transmission is also expected to debut on the next Challenger and is expected to be paired with the Hellcat. According to the latest product plan released by Chrysler Group, the next Challenger is set to debut in the middle of 2014 as a 2015 model. It's expected that the Hellcat engine will be built alongside Chrysler Group's 5.7-liter and 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 engines. The 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine, which is the smallest of the bunch currently assembled, produces as a little as 363 horsepower (in the Chrysler 300C) and as much as 395 hp (in the 2013 Ram 1500). A 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 engine powers the top-trim SRT models and is rated at 470 hp. This new 6.2-liter Hellcat engine will replace the 6.1-liter Hemi V-8 that last rolled off the production line back in 2010. The next generation of this engine was expected to debut in the 2015 Dodge Challenger all along but it looks like things (and numbers) have changed at the last minute. As more information surfaces, we'll pass it along to you so stay tuned. Source: Automotive News (subscription required)
