Confirmed: Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-In Hybrid Set to be Launched, Will Debut at Frankfurt
Mercedes-Benz confirmed that the new-generation S-Class will feature a plug-in hybrid model. Rumored since 2009, the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in hybrid is set to enter production and will be officially unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show next month. The Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in hybrid will be based off of the recently debuted 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and Mercedes-Benz says it will achieve 78 mpg combined (European cycle) while being capable of hurdling from 0-62 mph in 5.5 seconds. Powering the Mercedes-Benz Plug-in hybrid will be a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine and an electric motor which draws power from a lithium-ion battery pack. Mercedes has said this battery pack will be stored in the trunk. This drivetrain is rated at 328 horsepower from the engine and another 107 horsepower from the electric motor. When running strictly on electricity, the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in hybrid is expected to run somewhere between 15 to 20 miles before needing more juice. There are three different driving modes including "Hybrid," "E-Mode," and "E-Save." The hybrid mode pulls power from both the engine and electric motor, obviously, while E-Mode draws power only from the electric motor. You should be able to travel 18 miles on E-mode alone. E-Save charges the lithium-ion battery while a charging function does just that while the S500 Plug-in hybrid is in motion.Inside, an information screen conveys what's going on to the driver and also shows when the battery is being charged. The throttle vibrates when the gasoline engine is kicking into gear as well. With the addition of the S500 Plug-in hybrid, Mercedes' S-Class portfolio expands to three offerings including the S400 hybrid and S300 BlueTEC diesel hybrid, which is currently only available across the pond. Mercedes didn't say when the S500 Plug-in hybrid will become available, exactly, but logical reasoning points to it coming to market next year. Once the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in hybrid makes its official debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show next month, we expect to learn everything about it and when we do, we'll pass it along. Stay tuned.Source: Mercedes-Benz
