Dog Law set to Ban Lap Dogs While Driving in California is Vetoed

By Automotive Staff | October 06, 2008
Paris Hilton is having a very large pool party to celebrate. While we are pretty sure that she has a pool party to celebrate every day that ends with a “y,” this particular pool party is something special. You see, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill that would have outlawed driving with your dog in your lap. Airheaded starlets everywhere are breathing a sigh of relief. To many dog owners, say those with Labradors or Great Danes, the law seemed a might extraneous to their own lives. Would you want your 85 lb. Boxer named Willow to sit on your lap while driving, eradicating any chance you might have in the future of genetic reproduction? Didn’t think so. This law was pretty much going to only affect the little dogs. The ones who wear little pink T-shirts that say things like “Princess” or “Major *** Don’t get offended, these are real shirts and dogs are *** No letters please, we aren’t crazy about doggie couture either. The day you buy a Gucci dog collar is the day you have too much money and the IRS should raid your house just to take some stuff. Our view? While we stand firm that every dog owner should have the right to take their dog with them on rides in the car—the day that is outlawed is the day we move to Canada—there should be a limit to where the dog is sitting. If texting or talking on a cell phone is considered a distraction how is your Taco Bell Chihuahua yipping in the front seat not going to cause an accident one day? There are myriad options on the internet for safety harnesses and cargo carriers for automotive use. Or here’s a thought; why don’t you let Fido or Lady Barksalot ride in the back seat with his or her head out the window as God and nature intended. via Associated Press

My dog is tiny and lays quietly still on my lap. Never a distraction. Speaking of distractions, keep your kids at home. There are more accidents caused by parents arguing with kids or distracted by babies crying that get into accidents, more than people who have their dogs sitting in the front seat. Bunch of morons.

Lol, this whole article is well said. Though, it'd be a real tragedy if you got in an accident with your chihuahua sitting on your lap and your airbag happened to make a bloody Fido sandwich between the itself and your chest. :P

I am sorry but a dog on your lap is as much as a distraction than talking on a cell phone, if not more. I witnessed the other day a dog owner at a 4 way intersection. She was in the left had turn lane when her precious little rodent jumped from her lamp and bolted across the street. The owner with as much intelligence as her 4 legged mongrel ran into oncoming traffic as well (which by now was completely stopped due to this fiasco). I was unfortunately several cars behind in the oncoming traffic otherwise this would have ended really quickly with a very sad ex-pet owner.

I agree. Dogs can be distractions and should be in the backseat.

Well! I never!!! I love when my Chihuahua Gi’son sits on my lap and sticks his little Mexican head out the window to bark at the day-laborers on the corner. He also acts like he is driving the car with his hands on the steering wheel...so entertaining.

Here! Here! I'm all for bringing the pupperoni along for an adventure but the backseat or the back-back seat (for all those wagon owners) is where she should be. P.S Where's the ban on dogs wearing clothes? Now that's a law that should be passed!

Last week I saw a woman with two small dogs on her lap and she was holding a cell phone to her ear. She couldn't even steer the car properly. People should make their dogs (and cell phones) ride elsewhere in the car. They are too distracting.

Aren't there enough distractions in your lives, without having to have a wiggly little dog sitting on your lap while driving? Even cute little dogs are not a fashion accesory, and they should be kept as safe as our kids. I don't think we have to get crazy with laws to tell us our dogs must be in expensive car seats, but they are probably safest in the back seat where an air bag can't kill them when it explodes! I surely don't want my dog to become a hood ornament when I have to slam on the brakes either!

Owners should be able to decide where they want their dogs to sit! Isn't this a free country? Mine is always in the back seat, but I don't think they should be banned from the front.

@jacx My dog just distracted me for a second when it got up to sit on the middle console of my truck so it can safely see out without having to be on my lap . Last thing I saw was a green light , by the time I looked back it was now yellow so I started scanning the intersection to make sure it was safe to continue because I would have sent my small dog flying and possibly causing it harm . It also happened to be a photo intersection so as my front wheels just crossed the line it turned red and snapped my picture . I do plan to appear to see if I have a leg to stand on and the way the law is written I just may because I was unable to safely stop for that yellow light and thats all it says about when to stop for a yellow light . I have to agree, dogs are a distraction, when my daughter is in the car she holds and keeps it under control .  Wish me luck on this one , please .
