Famous Rides: Steve McQueen, Elvis, Sinatra Cars on Auction
They defined a generation, legends of the screen and stage, and in film and music, there were simply none bigger. This summer the public will have a chance to get closer to some of the most revered celebrities, and a few will walk away with a piece of history. The Mecum Auction being held in Santa Monica, California in late July will feature alluring collector's items such as Steve McQueen's 1969 Chevrolet C/10 Baja Truck. McQueen, also known as "the king of cool," starred in The Thomas Crown Affair, The Getaway, and The Cincinnati Kid among many others, and was an avid car and motorcycle buff. McQueen's 1931 Harley Davidson VL 74 Motorcycle will also be up for the highest bidder. And if you're not an avid Steve McQueen fan, Elvis Presley's 1972 Cadillac Custom Estate Wagon will be on hand, as will Frank Sinatra's 1989 Jaguar XJS. The V-12 coupe was said to be Sinatra's Palm Springs cruiser. Music fans will be able to preview and bid on a George Barris 1957 Chevy Coupe, made for The Beatles legend Ringo Starr. Barris had a long standing relationship with Hollywood, and built famous collectibles like the 1966 Batmobile, which was also recently auctioned off. Other odd finds include the "Flinstone Family Car" from the 1994 film adaptation of The Flinstones. The Mecum auction will take place in Santa Monica's Barker Hangar, recently the site of the 2014 Toyota Corolla debut extravaganza. Preview days will be held July 25-26, and the live auction will take place on Friday July 26 from 5:00-9:00 and Saturday July 27 from 1:00-5:00. You can learn more about all of the cars and collectible items on Mecum's webpage.
