First Look: 2014 Honda Fit EV Boasts Styling Tweaks, Expected to Touch 55 MPG

By Trevor Dorchies | July 18, 2013
You know they old saying, "If it's not broke, don't fix it." Well, it appears Honda adheres to this expression when it comes to its subcompact hatchback, the Fit. Introduced back in 2001, the Honda Fit has managed to move over 1.3 million units worldwide and has spanned two generations now. However, Honda is turning the page on the second-gen Fit and welcoming in the latest variation for the 2014 model year.  This time around, the Fit comes in a hybrid form, and Honda promises at least 55 mpg. We'll have to wait and get behind the wheel of the 2014 Honda Fit EV before we can actually verify that, but still, that's an impressive figure. As stated above, the 2014 Honda Fit EV is expected to see an improvement of 35 percent and it will be the first Honda model ever to come with SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive. That's all fancy jargon for Honda's all-new lightweight compact hybrid system that features a single motor and is tailor-made for small vehicles like the Fit. The SPORT HYBRID nomenclature is what Honda is calling this new hybrid system as it interacts with the automaker's Earth Dreams Technology. This one motor system disengages the engine to give way for all-electric functions allowing the 2014 Honda Fit EV to travel up to 25 mph without needing an ounce of gasoline. Paragraphimage A new 1.5-liter inline-4 cylinder Atkinson cycle engine is mated to the SPORT HYBRID seven-speed dual clutch transmission. A high-output motor and intelligent power unit (or IPU) helps boost fuel economy and is good for 135 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque.  On top of that, a regenerative braking system rides on board to help with fuel economy as well. There are three different driving modes to choose from on the 2014 Honda Fit EV including EV Drive (relies solely on the electric motor), Hybrid Drive Mode (which uses both the gas engine and electric motor), and Engine Drive Mode (which draws power from the gas engine only). Honda promises that the 2014 Fit will be more powerful than other comparable models and will deliver a linear acceleration feel. Overall, Honda says the 2014 Fit will be fun to drive, and it won't cost you as often at the pump. The 2014 Honda Fit is set to hit dealerships later this year and as soon as we get behind the wheel, we'll let you know how it is.
