Ford Divulges MPG Ratings For The Focus ST

By Blake Z. Rong | July 12, 2012
The mileage ratings for Ford's hottest Focus have been released, and when it comes out in the fall, the 203 Ford Focus ST will net 32 mpg on the highway, 23 around town, and 26 mpg combined. According to Ford, that's among the best in class: 7 more highway miles than the thirsty Mazdaspeed 3, and 1 more than the 4-door Volkswagen GTI. But equip a GTI with the DSG automatic and expect to see mileage surpass that of the Focus, at 33 mpg highway and 24 city. The more powerful Golf R has 256 horsepower and gets 27 mpg highway and 19 mpg city, so that's handily dusted in this regard by the Focus ST. (Its AWD drivetrain and German good looks, however, are an advantage.) That's also less than the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, which we drove last month; at 38 highway, 26 city and 30 combined, it matches the Focus ST. But it also has 51 fewer horsepower. Ford's Focus ST produces a snorting 252 horsepower from its 2.0-liter Ecoboost turbo, which allows it to reach 154 mph, something you wouldn't want to do in any other small Ford of recent memory. Ford's press release on the matter advertised the Focus ST's mileage as "Class-Leading." That's a curious artifact of what it's like to write company-promoting press releases to amplify and potentially mislead. But it also depends on what class it is. With more horsepower than the GTI and Veloster Turbo, and on par with the 263-horsepower Mazdaspeed 3 and 256-horsepower Golf R, the Focus ST certainly feels like a good compromise between the two. Look for our first drive of the Focus ST later this year. Source: Ford
