Ford May Replace V-6 Engines for 2013 Edge with EcoBoost Fours: Good Idea?

By Jacob Brown | July 06, 2011
New speculation from Ford Inside News suggests that the next generation Ford Edge midsize crossover may forgo V-6 engines altogether for two turbocharged four-cylinder engines using the automaker's EcoBoost technology. The Edge is expected to move to the CD4 platform with the Ford Fusion and Mondeo sedans as well as the Lincoln MKZ when it is redesigned sometime during 2012 for the 2013 model year. In the process, the two-ton Edge should drop some weight and, if rumors prove to be true, will adopt an EcoBoost engine to slot above the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder that will debut for the 2012 Edge. While numbers aren’t official yet, Ford says the 2.0-liter engine has around 230 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque, so a larger-displacement engine, likely 2.3 or 2.5 liters, should be able to match the performance of the current Duratec 3.5-liter V-6 that has 285 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque while delivering better fuel economy. With the performance and fuel economy of the turbocharged engines comes an added level of complexity. Do you think it’s a smart move for Ford to get rid of its stalwart V-6 engines in the Edge in favor of an all-turbocharged lineup? Source: Ford Inside News

Ford should have the same engine options they are using for the 2013 Fusion. This would give the consumer more choices. Most of all, I would like to see Ford come out with a AWD vehicle that gets about 35 mpg in the city & 40 mpg on the highway. This would be great for people who live in snow country, East or West.

For years I have sold cars. The idea of the turbo is in my opinion a great one. every engine should be turbo. The Edge would be perfect in this area, as long as the torque stays or improves. Ford hit a homerun on the new focas but could do better with the titanium edition. 26 grand and underpowered? at leasdt provide an option for ecoboost, hell even the 3.5 eco! 300 plus on that car would sell. add an AWD system Ford. FOrd is on a roll 100% grat product but add some hot peppers and kick it up!
