Ford’s Mustang Production in Peril as Camaro Competition, Supply Issues Dampen Demand

By Jacob Brown | June 16, 2011
In the drag race for muscle car sales supremacy, the Ford Mustang is trailing the Chevrolet Camaro more than it has in a long time. Last month, Ford sold 6607 Mustangs compared to Chevrolet’s  9451 Camaros sold. Year-to-date, 30,206 Mustangs and 40,275 Camaros have been sold. By comparison, Dodge sold 3418 Challengers in May, bringing its sales to 16,777 for a distant third place. The decreasing sales put Ford in a difficult spot as Mazda recently announced it will be pulling production of the Mazda6 midsize sedan from the Flat Rock, Michigan production facility that also manufactures the Mustang. Ford sold 73,716 Mustangs in 2010, falling far below the plant’s 240,000-car annual capacity and placing 1700 jobs in jeopardy as Ford must now decide the business sense in keeping the plant open. While Ford upgraded its engine options for 2011, Chevrolet has been quick to counter with a new convertible and a more powerful and fuel-efficient V-6 for the 2012 model year. Supply issues have also hampered the Mustang, as it shares its popular 305-horsepower V-6 with the F-150 pickup truck. Simply put, Ford doesn’t have enough of its 31-mpg engines to meet demand in a market with high gas prices. Ford hopes to bolster Mustang sales in 2014 when the car is redesigned, but don’t look for the competition to sit idle. Hyundai is expected to add more power to its Genesis Coupe for 2012, and Chevrolet is introducing its 550-horsepower Camaro ZL1 next year with the Mustang Shelby GT500 in its sights. Ford faces quite a dilemma with the future of the Mustang, but with the muscle car market stronger than it’s been in a while, now is a great time to be in the market for a sports coupe.
