Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler has released scheduling details on its Smart brand. The Smart ForTwo electric vehicle will hit the streets in 2012. While the subcompact will get a freshened interior, the most important change is when smart drops the nickel-based batteries and switches to a new lithium ion version. A couple of years later, the 2014 Smart ForTwo will debut under a new platform developed jointly by Smart and French automaker Renault. The French automaker plans to use the new platform most likely for its Twingo subcompact. This new Smart ForTwo will most likely will be launched by 2014. Finally, Smart pulls a page from Mini and grows large with plans to debut four-passenger vehicle. To be called the Smart ForFour, the new, larger vehicle is based off Daimler and Renault's new platform. Smart has tentatively planned to launch the resulting vehicle by 2015. Source: Automotive News
