Head2Head: 2013 SRT Viper Takes on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

By Jacob Brown | July 07, 2013
Horsepower. Lots of horsepower. And a voracious appetite for melting tires. So few cars combine these two traits so well as the 2013 SRT Viper and the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series. They're both brash, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports cars with more than 600 horsepower apiece. But which is better? In this week's episode of Head2Head, Motor Trend's Jonny Lieberman aims to find out. The Mercedes-Benz started development when the German company still owned Chrysler, and the SLS AMG and Viper were originally going to share much of the same architecture before Chrysler was offloaded to a holdings group as it slowly bled through the Great Recession. But both sports cars survived, with the SRT Viper coming back a reborn snake, improved all around from its predecessor. The SLS AMG Black Series is the third iteration of the SLS AMG, morphing from a six-figure muscle car to a legitimate sports car in the SLS AMG GT to an all-out supercar in the Black Series. Of course, with the upgrades come another $100,000 tacked onto its price. All told, it's nearly three times what the SRT Viper costs. But does that play a role in picking a winner? See for yourself in the video below.
