If you're going to have a recall, sometimes its best to swing for the fences, we guess. Collectively, Hyundai and Kia are recalling 1.7 million vehicles for faulty brake switches. According to the recall, the vehicles affected may not illuminate their brake lights or deactivate cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed. Further, with a defective brake switch, the cars may not be able to shift out of park, and their stability control lights may malfunction. In a statement, Hyundai said, "A switch that intermittently malfunctions does not affect a vehicle’s brake performance, only these operations listed here." Another recall for the Korean-produced 2011 through 2013 Hyundai Elantra has also been issued due to its headliner mounting brackets potentially becoming dislodged in the occurrence of a curtain airbag deploying in an accident, which affects 186,254 cars. All of which could heighten the risk of an accident or injury. The recalled vehicles for the brake switch are as follows: Hyundai Kia Both automakers will notify customers by April 30 as to when they can have their vehicles fixed, free of charge. Currently, neither has enough spares to fulfill all of the recalls, but they will by May. Furthermore, any customers who have had to replace the parts at an out-of-pocket expense will be reimbursed. This is not the first time the two Korean automakers have dealt with brake switch problems, having redesigned the electric terminals before in a 2011. The recall will likely extend to Canada in the following months, as the above numbers are simply for the U.S. and its territories. Sources: NHTSA, Hyundai
