Hyundai HND-9 Concept Makes Debut at Seoul Motor Show; Genesis Coupe Cues to Emerge

By Jacob Brown | March 28, 2013
Hyundai isn't mincing words with the HND-9 concept coupe just introduced at the 2013 Seoul Motor Show today: "HND-9 hints at direction of Hyundai’s next-generation luxury sports coupe." Outside of the rotating flip-up doors, if this is what the next-generation Hyundai Genesis Coupe looks like, we'll be pretty happy. Paragraphimage There's not much to the Hyundai HND-9 concept that we haven't already said. It's an evolution of Hyundai's "Fluidic Sculpture" design language, and it's powered by a turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 engine with 370 horsepower, routing that grunt to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Its interior is pure concept car. But Hyundai says the HND-9's design cues, including the "spiral sculpture concept" that comprises most of the curves in this car's body will live on. Hyundai has quickly tried evolving its international brand identity as "modern premium" and looks to move it further upscale. In the U.S., the Genesis Coupe is priced like a Ford Mustang and supposedly competitive with the Infiniti G37 coupe; we're not sure it's quite there yet. Alas, Hyundai has made great strides with driving dynamics in many of its newer vehicles, and we think that if this car's handling and feel holds up as well as its styling when it reaches production form, Hyundai should sell these things like hotcakes at a church fundraiser.
