Ignition Episode 56: 2013 MazdaSpeed3 Does Its Best Impression of a Muscle Car

By Jacob Brown | March 05, 2013
While a bit brutish for a sport compact car, there's something endearing about the 2013 MazdaSpeed3. Mazda has programmed it to limit the torque--pulling force--going to the front wheels in first and second gear because it's simply too much grunt for the car. It has a little but of understeer--front-end plowing--in hard corners. And its engine drones at highway speeds. Yet, it's likable beyond compare, says host Carlos Lago. In fact, the only thing Lago can feel the MazdaSpeed3 can draw comparison to is a muscle car: unrefined and awesome. The 2013 MazdaSpeed3 packs 255 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque--that's a lot--from its tiny 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. It can rip around from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and is something of an anomaly among its competitive set. But it certainly gets up and goes with some authority. See Lago's full review in this week's episode of "Ignition" below.
