Inside the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Even though the Mercedes-Benz lineup has received a lot of criticism--from overwrought styling on some models to somehow being too luxurious on others--our colleagues at Automobile Magazine say the new C-Class due in March 2014 promises to get a lot of things right. It will be sleek and sporty, roomier than the previous model, but not too close to the E-Class. The new C-Class will lose more than 200 pounds, and will offer more frugal engine choices like a mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The new interior no longer features the glossy interior, but breaks from tradition to introduce more modern materials, user-friendly instruments, and a larger color display. The automaker, believing in this model, has invested and extra $350 per unit to make the roof, doors, front fenders, hood, and trunk lid out of aluminum instead of steel, which will improve fuel economy. In March, the C-Class coupe and convertible received the green light, as they had been on hold for several months. The new CLK is expected to undercut the Audi A5 and BMW 4 Series, with the CLE positioned between the BMW 4 and 6 Series. Both the coupe and convertible variants will be available with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. As of now, Mercedes-Benz does not have a three-cylinder engine that would fit the C-Class, and the only four-cylinder engines are made to order by Renault. This strategy will change, but the core C-Class powertrains will be those from the A- and B-Class models. Below is what we believe will be powering each 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class model:
  • C220 CDI: 2.2-liter turbodiesel inline-4
  • C250 CDI: 2.2-liter turbodiesel inline-4
  • C300 CDI: 2.2-liter turbodiesel inline-4
  • C180: 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4
  • C200: 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4
  • C250: 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4
  • C300: 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4
  • C400: 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6
  • C63 AMG: 4.0-liter V-8
