IntelliChoice and AutoPacific Announce 2011 Motorist Choice Awards

Everyone loves lists—IntelliChoice and AutoPacific included. The two research firms partnered for the 2011 Motorist Choice Awards, which recognize "those vehicles that deliver the compelling combination of high consumer satisfaction and lower-than-expected ownership costs over time." The MCA is a collection of 15 "lifestyle segment" categories that IC and AP hope will simplify the car buying process. Each of the 15 categories has two winners, essentially separated by budget based on recommendations from a panel of consumers. IC and AP then determined winners in each grouping, which they believe provides an effective means of evaluating the best performing vehicles in each class. “The Motorist Choice Awards are designed to assist consumers by using a categorization scheme other than traditional vehicle classes. Our research has shown that buyers often shop in more than one vehicle segment based on their needs and uses, rather than simply choosing a segment and then comparing models within it,” said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific.'s Take: We like the idea of segments classified by the vehicle's function more so than its physical characteristics, ie. People Mover versus 8-passenger SUV. In this manner, IC and AP have created a relevant and useful car buying tool. But if you're like us, you may be scratching your head concerning some of the winners. We've seen this before with AutoPacific and its Ideal Vehicle Awards. For example, we're not sure the Cadillac Escalade is "High Tech" or even "Performance." How do you feel about the choices? And the categories? Leave a comment below!
