It's Never Too Early For Christmas, Says Neiman-Marcus And Its McLaren 12C Spyder

By Blake Z. Rong | October 10, 2012
Every year the Neiman-Marcus department store releases its “Fantasy Gifts and Experiences” Christmas catalog nauseatingly early, a glossy-paged orgy to well-heeled, limited-edition extravagance. This year’s catalog includes a JetLev water-propelled jetpack, a Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Woody-Tailgate Trailer with a one-year supply of Bulleit rye, a private dinner for 10 as prepared by chefs from the French Laundry, a rooster house with a Versailles-inspired Le Petit Trianon house and complete with chandelier and faux Louis XVI furniture for chickens, matching Van Cleef & Arpels "Poetic Wish" watches with 60-hour power reserve repeater movements and engraved with gold, enamel, and mother-of-pearl, and for $30,000, a walk-on role for the Broadway musical “Annie,” presumably one of the more lavish ways a socialite can obtain her own IMDB page. Oh, and there’s usually a car involved—because a car carries less shipping costs than a Mediterranean-inspired six-bedroom in Mulholland Estates and its saltwater pool, and likewise this year’s offering is no different. It’s the McLaren 12C Spyder: “one of just twelve made,” says Neiman-Marcus,” until Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan raises his voice, anyway. The Neiman-Marcus Edition comes in Volcano Red with a matching McLaren luggage set and a dinner with McLaren founder Ron Dennis at the company’s headquarters in Woking, England, which could also be obtained by founding a Formula 1 racing team and luring his drivers away, an option that the people who read this catalog are also able to make happen. To assuage the guilt of the sybarites, Neiman-Marcus will donate $3,000 of the McLaren’s $354,000 cost to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America with the hopes that owners will adopt an impoverished child in their open-topped hypercar and gradually introduce them to a life of monetary pursuit. Rumors that next year’s Neiman-Marcus catalog will feature a 24-karat gold-bedecked, full-sized replica of the LZ-127 Graf Zeppelin, complete with matching luggage and uniform-equipped fräulein, are as yet unsubstantiated.
