It's Official: Mazda CX-5 to Debut at 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show

Fans of the "cute-ute" segment will soon have another compact crossover joining the ever-expanding field. Mazda today announced it will debut the production version of its Mazda CX-5 next month at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The Mazda CX-5 showcases the automaker's new "Kodo – Soul of Motion" design language. The new design, first unveiled in the Mazda Shinari and Mazda Minagi concept vehicles, replaces the current Pokemon-esque smiling-face grille plastering Mazda's currently vehicles with a more prominent hexagonal front end. The Mazda CX-5 will also debut the European-spec Skyactive engines. The automaker continues to provide little information about the engines, except it will debut both gasoline and diesel versions at the motor show including associated transmissions. The Mazda CX-5 is the entry-level model in the automaker's crossover lineup, which includes the CX-7 and CX-9. The automaker, famous for its "Zoom-Zoom" tagline, has not announced if the Mazda CX-5 will go on sale as a 2012 or 2013 model. Our take? The cute-ute segment is composed of such members as the Ford Escort, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4 with newcomers like the Hyundai Tucson and the Kia Sportage providing strong competition.
