Jeep, Lincoln, GMC Lead Chrysler, Ford, GM Resurgence for September

Like last month, Chrysler and its Jeep brand took the lead among the Detroit automakers as far as percentage gains go. While GM and Ford both sold more vehicles, Chrysler LLC saw overall sales up a whopping 31 percent versus the same period last year. Ford: The Blue Oval continues to see modest gains in overall sales, with August showing an 11 percent gain versus the same time last year. Crossovers and SUVs—aka "utilities"—again lead Ford sales, finishing 49 percent higher than in August 2010 followed by modest car sales (up 10 percent) and truck purchases (up 5 percent). Lincoln overall sales rose 25 percent compared to the same period last year.
  • Demand for Ford Fiestas are still strong at 5,833 units sold, up 76 percent from last year.
  • Fusion sales totaled 168,929 units sold, up 16 percent from August 2010.
  • Sales of the all-new Ford Focus dropped 9 percent compared to last year's model, stymied by parts shortages. Let's hope there's no strike to slow things even further.
  • The Ford Escape continues to be highly sought by consumer, with August sales up 39 percent compared to last year.
  • Lincoln MKZ again leads the luxury brand's sales for August at 2,337, 50 percent higher than last year.
General Motors: Sales of passenger cars, crossovers and SUVs, and trucks contributed near equally to GM's overall sales increase of 18 percent this August. Both car and truck sales rose 18 percent compared to 2010, while crossover sales rose 17 percent.
  • While Chevrolet Cruze sales are still strong, consumers apparently want SUVs as sales of the Chevy Equinox rose 58 percent versus 2010.
  • Like Chevy, crossover and SUV sales were strong for GMC with sales of GMC Terrain up an amazing 88 percent and GMC Arcadia up 54 percent.
  • Cadillac retail sales rose 17 percent compared to August 2010. More importantly, though, is the luxury brand reduced its fleet sales by more than 50 percent.
  • Buick continues to grow, with sales up 27 percent compared to last year and Regal purchases more than double since its debut.
Chrysler: Jeep, again, leads the brand with an amazing 58 percent sales increase versus August 2010, followed by Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, and Fiat. Truck sales continue to overshadow car sales, up 33 percent from last year versus car sales which rose 23 percent this year.
  • The refreshed 2011 Jeep Compass saw sales surge up by 130 percent compared to last year.
  • Dodge saw sale rise for all its models for August 2011 except for the soon-to-be discontinued Dodge Caliber, which dropped 12 percent, and the Dodge Charger which fell 19 percent.
  • Sales of the 2011 Chrysler 200 largely fuel the brand's 25 percent growth compared to the same period last year.
  • Ram Truck sales rose 7 percent in August 2011 versus 2010.
