Jeep Teams Up With Activision Publishing To Release Special Edition Wrangler
Exactly where "Jeep" comes from is the source of arguments for hard-core fans and automotive aficionados alike. Some say it refers to the original "GP" military designation, which stood for General Purpose or Government Purposes. Others insist it was called "GPW" with the "G" standing for government, the "P" for the size, and the "W" an abbreviation for its Willys-Overland engine. A third, slightly more whimsical theory posits that it's from Popeye's pet, "Eugene the Jeep," a character with a knack for getting out of tough situations. Whichever one you decide to believe, there's no denying Jeep's heritage with the armed forces. This is why Activision Publishing, maker of the popular third-person shooter video-game series "Modern Warfare 3: Call of Duty," has decided to partner with Jeep. In an effort to promote the third installment of its newest game, Activision and Jeep will release the Wrangler as a special edition model. The special edition Wrangler includes features imitating popular facets seen in the game. Based on the Rubicon model, the MW3 Special Edition will be offered as a two-door Wrangler or four-door Wrangler Unlimited. The stock Rubicon wheels are painted in semi-gloss black, but there is an option to switch back to the normal five-spoke wheel. A "power-dome" hood along with Mopar accessories like a winch-ready front bumper, rear bumper, rock rails, tail lamp guards and a fuel-filler door are offered on the special edition Wrangler. Off-roading is standard operating procedure in a Wrangler and the MW3 edition comes with 32-inch off-road tires. As stated earlier these wheels can be switched out for the regular five spokes as part of an available dealer-installed package. Also in the package includes a Warn winch and a 2-inch lift kit. There is a choice of black or silver exterior colors for the special edition Wrangler. Depending on the model selected dictates which black seats with accent stitching and "Call of Duty" logos await inside. There are "MW3" graphics on the redesigned instrument cluster that illuminate in the customary neon green associated with the video game series. Each Wrangler has a serial number on the dashboard distinguishing which number in production it was. The Call of Duty logo is also found on the dashboard grab handle and more accent stitching can be seen on the arm rests, console lid, and steering wheel. The new 3.6 liter Pentastar engine makes its debut on the COD Wrangler and is expected to deliver up to 21 mpg on the highway. A new five-speed automatic transmission replaces the previous four-speed gearbox. No prices have been announced for the special edition Jeep but we expect to see something right before both the game and Wrangler's release in early November.
