Kia GT on Sale by 2016; Roadster Concept to Debut in Detroit
Since the debut of the Kia GT concept in Frankfurt back in 2011, many have been wondering if we'd ever see a production model hit our shores. It looks like it is finally happening. According to Auto Express, we can expect to see the Kia GT on sale by late 2016. Although the concept shown was rear-wheel drive, it's more likely that the production model will be offered in front-wheel drive, as the automaker only offers rear-wheel drive on the full-size K9/Quoris platform that will soon be sold in the U.S. Soon-Nam Lee, Kia's vice president of overseas marketing, told Auto Express "We have plans to build a GT--we spoke about it at our global marketing conference in Singapore. We'll be mainly targeting the end of 2016 or early 2017." However, rumor has it that corporate cousin Hyundai is planning on developing a small sports sedan to compete with the BMW 3 Series, and if that proves so, we can expect a Kia GT to also come from the Genesis Coupe-sized sedan.Though the GT may be a ways away, Kia has plans to introduce a new concept at the Detroit Motor Show. Paul Philpott, president of Kia UK and Ireland, wants to have a Mazda MX-5 Miata fighter in the Kia lineup, and says the brand will bring a roadster concept with it to the show in January. Kia has been fighting to show that it's the sporty side of the Hyundai-Kia family, and with this edition, hopes to cement that position. There has been no word as of yet for when this concept may enter production, but it wouldn't be a first for the brand. Back in 2004, Kia released a roadster concept that failed to gain traction for the once-diminutive automaker. Before that, Kia bought the rights to produce the reintroduced Lotus Elan under its own nameplate during the late-1990s overseas. Source: Auto Express
