King of the Hill: 2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i EPA Rating Announced

Thanks to volatile gas prices that have plagued the global market over the past few years, consumers have shied away from bigger vehicles, such as SUVs. BMW is looking to buck the recent trend without waiting for fuel prices to come back down to earth with the introduction of the 2013 X3 xDrive28i. This newest X3's new 2.4-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine offers just as much power as the old 3.0-liter inline-six engine, but with a significant bump in fuel economy.  The EPA has also just announced that the 2013 X3 xDrive28i earned a combined 24 mpg; 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. To fuel the 2013 X3 xDrive28i for a year, it will cost you around $2,600, making it the cheapest of all luxury SUVs in its segment. When compared against common rivals like the 2012 Audi Q5, 2012 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, and the 2012 Volvo XC60, the 2013 BMW X3's fuel economy comes out on top. The only model close to the 2013 BMW X3 is the 2012 Audi Q5 which earned a rating of 22 mpg combined. The 2012 XC60 came in third with a rating of 20 mpg combined and the GLK-Class finished last earning a rating of 18 mpg combined. The new engine to serve in the latest X3 is rated at 240 horsepower and has been tuned to make the throttle response feel quicker. First-time features to appear on the 2013 X3 xDrive28i include a Driving Dynamics Control, lane departure warning, a power liftgate, and an auto start-stop to help save fuel. The smallest of the X3's now rides along 18-inch alloy wheels and a chrome exhaust tip has been added for good measures as well. The recent announcement of the 2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i's fuel economy figures bodes well for the soon-to-be-stateside X1. The smallest variant of BMW's SUV stable is slated to join the American lineup this coming fall and carries a base price of $31,545. With the bigger X3's ability to earn pack-leading fuel economy figures, the smaller X1 is expected to surpass those figures with room to spare. What say you? I test drove one today. Really liked the drive train. Smooth power with lots of torque. The mileage computer on the highway at 60 mph was over 30 mpg. I'm seriously thinking about this one.
